Roof Moss: Treatment and Removal

Roof Moss RemovalNew for 2014!

We now feature roof moss treatment and removal at LangleyWindowCleaning.com.  Removing moss from a roof is extremely hard work, yet the results can be nothing short of amazing after you see the difference.

You can see how to remove moss from a roof in this video I made on location in 2014 in Langley, BC, Canada.

We Live in a Rain Forest

If you live in Greater Vancouver area, you know how much it rains here and what a favorable environment we have for moss growth; especially on the north side of a roof!

We are always working on improving our removal process so as to do no harm to your roof.  In fact, having it removed properly can extend the life of your roof.

Depending on your location, your house may be a little more prone to moss growth, especially if you have trees nearby.  It’s best to not let it get too out of hand, so we recommend having your roof treated once a year to keep things under control.

In really extreme cases, we can also gently clean roofs as shown in the above video.  We can access most gentle pitched roofs.  We will not climb on steep pitch roofs.  We will utilize fall arrest harnesses and safety lines where necessary for our safety.

If you have problems with moss growth on the roof of your house, and you would rather not risk climbing up and tackling it yourself, you can always fill in a quote request to get a free estimate delivered to your inbox.

By having moss removed from your roof, you may save the thousands of dollars it would cost to have your roof replaced.  You can save money by allowing us to clean the moss of your roof.  Why not give us a call today?

Gutter Cleaning: How to tips and tricks

Gutter Cleaning How-To Tips + Tricks

When cleaning gutters, there are 2 sides to the coin. The inside clean and the outside wash.

Here is a list of basic tools and equipment you will need to get the job done effectively.  After the list of tools are the how-to steps for vacuuming and washing gutters and eaves trough inside + out.

Tools for inside cleaning:

  • Ladder
  • Ladder stabilizer
  • Bucket (with a hook on the handle to hang it from the gutter)
  • A gutter scoop (thin enough to scrape the inside bottom of the gutter)
  • A rag
  • An extension pole
  • A powerful wet/dry vacuum is recommended (6+ HP)
  • 50-75 feet of vacuum hose to reach from the ground to the roof of most homes
  • Roofer’s safety harness
  • Insurance is always recommended when going on roofs (check local laws)

How to clean inside gutters:

*** Make sure you are harnessed when climbing any ladder or accessing roofs. Always comply with safety laws and keep your disability/accident insurance up to date. ***

  1. Set up your ladder so the stabilizers are resting above the gutter on the roof (start near a downspout).
  2. Place your rag and scoop inside bucket and hang it from the gutter.
  3.  Turn on the vacuum and bring the hose up to your work area.
  4. If gutters are full of debris, scoop out the excess into your bucket first (especially large debris that can clog your vacuum hose).
  5. Next vacuum any remaining loose debris(You can usually slide the hose quite far).
  6. If the vacuum misses anything, place a damp rag inside and slide it down the gutter using your pole to push it.  (It will wipe it clean as it slides)
  7. Work from the higher ones to the lower ones, repeat steps 1-6 until you’re done.

Tools for outside washing:

  • 100 feet of garden hose
  • Water tap
  • Liquid mixer sprayer
  • Water fed brush extension pole (30 feet minimum)
  • Industrial cleaning solution (get the strongest liquid cleaning agent you can find at your local hardware store or cleaning supplier)

How to wash the exteriors:

  • Pour industrial cleaning solution into liquid mixer sprayer.
  • Connect liquid mixer sprayer to your garden hose.
  • Connect garden hose to water tap and turn it on.
  • Spray the cleaning solution onto the exterior gutters. (adjust sprayer accordingly)
  • Saturate all exterior areas with cleaning solution.
  • Connect water fed brush extension pole to water hose and tap.
  • Extend pole to reach.
  • Turn on water tap.
  • Scrub and rinse all outside gutters.

The tools and methods used for outside gutter washing can be applied to siding washing as well. Langley Vinyl Siding Washing

Vinyl siding washing can do wonders for beautifying your home.

If you live in lower mainland, British Columbia, then you especially know what I mean. The amount of yearly rainfall here is significant and can cause algae and moss overgrowth on virtually every object.

In order to keep a home looking and feeling good, it is a good idea to have your siding washed every 2-3 years, otherwise it can become pretty green and be on its way back to nature.

Here is an example of a home before being washed in South Langley Aldergrove:

In this picture the right side has been washed for a comparison:

As you can see, it can make a huge difference when we wash your siding for you. You can relax, put your feet up and let us do the hard work knowing that we will be careful and do a great job of beautifying your home environment.

House Washing

When it comes to house washing, there are many methods and techniques to clean the exterior of your home. Whether you have vinyl siding, gutters, windows and/or a deck with railing that is dirty, typically we can get it clean again.

When you decide to hire us to beautify your house and/or business, our qualified, experienced professional will methodically start at the top and work their way down. On a typical house exterior cleaning job where our client’s order gutters (in and out), siding washing, window/screens cleaned, and deck/patio/walk/driveway power washing this is how we do it.

1. Gutters (In):

We begin with a good vacuuming and rinsing of the inside of your gutters.

2. Gutters (out):

We apply a solution to the outside of your gutters to loosen any dirt and algae. Then we gently scrub the exterior of the gutter with a long water fed pole and brush system. (See our YouTube Channel for a demonstration)

3. Vinyl siding, decks and railings:

Next, we apply a cleaning solution to all of the siding, railings and decks to be cleaned to loosen any dirt and algae. We follow that with a gentle brush scrub with the water fed pole system for higher, hard to reach areas. On the lower level areas, we carefully power wash the siding to the ground. In some cases, our client’s request a brush wash from top to bottom.

4. Window cleaning:

When it comes to high windows 4-5 floors above ground, our qualified and experienced professional will utilize our water fed pole and brush system to safely scrub and rinse not only the window glass, but also the frames and tracks as best he can.

If you desire to have your windows hand scrubbed and dried by squeegee, we can safely reach most windows up to 3 floors above ground.

5. Walkways and driveways:

The finishing touch to having the exterior of your home beautified is to have your concrete walks and driveway pressure washed by a qualified professional.

The Best Time to Schedule Home Maintenance Services

This is a question I have been hearing a lot lately. As we move into spring and summer months, most reputable businesses in lower mainland, British Columbia end up booking up one to two or even more months ahead. It can be very difficult to find a company that has immediate openings in their schedule.

This is actually a good thing because when a company is fully booked for at least a month in advance, you know they must do great work since they are in high demand.

If you find yourself calling last minute to find a company that can do next day or within the week service, prepare to be disappointed. There is a secret to hiring the company you really want to take care of your home maintenance services such as:

– window cleaning
– gutter cleaning & vacuuming
– vinyl siding washing
– decks, patios, walkways & driveway power washing

The secret to get the company you really want is to call to schedule your appointment well in advance. Ultimately the best time to schedule your appointment will be in the winter months. This is typically the slow time in this industry and ideally the best time to call.

December, January and February would be the ultimate time to contact your service provider, since it typically begins getting very busy into March.

Another great thing you can do to secure your spot with your home maintenance company of choice would be to agree on a home maintenance schedule. Whether you choose to schedule a monthly, quarterly or yearly appointment, it is always highly recommended to make sure your home environment stays clean and free of unsightly algae, moss and dirt buildup by scheduling your appointment well in advance.

Whether you choose us as your service provider or not, we can definitely say from experience that whomever you decide to call will appreciate your not calling last second expecting immediate service. When clients call well in advance especially during winter months, we would love to hear from you and secure your appointment well in advance.
